Mexico's 19% Laptop Tax: What You Need to Know

Mexico's Infamous Laptop Tax

You've booked your flight to Cancun/Playa del Carmen/CDMX. You're ready for tacos and coworking. But wait—did you pack your backup laptop?

The Law

Mexican customs law allows passengers to bring ONE portable computer duty-free. If you bring a second one, you are subject to a 16-19% tax on the assessed value of the device.

The Reality

  • Cancun (CUN): Notorious for screening every bag. They have a "red light / green light" system, but they often X-ray bags before you even press the button.
  • Mexico City (MEX): Hit or miss.
  • Land Borders: Often more relaxed, but not guaranteed.

How to Prepare

  1. Bring only one laptop if possible. Use an iPad as a second screen/backup (tablets are usually counted separately).
  2. Have receipts ready. If you MUST bring a second laptop, bring a receipt showing a lower value if possible (e.g., it's old/used). They will look up the current retail price if you don't have proof.
  3. Be polite. Getting angry will only ensure they charge you the maximum amount.

What about Monitors?

Technically, portable monitors aren't explicitly "computers". However, agents often lump them in. Try to carry it in a separate bag or make it look like a tablet.
